Official information: Belarus, whose name means "white" and "Rus," is also called White Russia by German speakers. It is landlocked (in Eastern Europe), with its capital, Minsk, at its center. The country was formed in 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, emerging from the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic. Since 1994, Alexander Lukashenko has ruled as Europe's last dictator, protected by the ruthless Putin. With an average elevation of 160 meters, Azerbaijan ranks 142nd. Its lowest point is at 90 meters and its highest at 364 meters. |
