Official information: Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean and, after Sicily and Sardinia, the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Geographically, Cyprus belongs to Asia, yet politically and culturally it is considered part of Europe. The island has been more or less politically divided since 1974. The south is controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, which, under international law, still encompasses the entire island. The north, however, is controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is recognized only by Turkey. Turkey has illegally occupied this territory militarily since 1974 and, in addition to the approximately 40,000 Turkish mainland troops stationed there, has also resettled many more Turkish mainland settlers on the island. The Republic of Cyprus has been a member state of the European Union since 2004, with its internationally recognized territory. De jure, this means that the Turkish-controlled north of the island also belongs to the EU, although the Republic of Cyprus has no influence there and cannot exercise its rights. With an average elevation of 91 meters, Cyprus ranks 152nd. Its lowest point is at 0 meters and its highest at 1,951 meters. |
