  Official information:
Indonesia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere, located in Southeast Asia (and Oceania). Indonesia consists of numerous islands; in addition to the four or five main islands, there are many smaller ones, totaling over 17,000.

The largest islands—from west to east—are: a) Sumatra, one of the most populous islands; b) Java, the most populous island and home to Jakarta; c) Borneo, which is shared with Malaysia and Brunei; d) Sulawesi; and e) New Guinea, shared with Papua New Guinea.

With over 280 million inhabitants, Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world.

Indonesia was a Dutch colony for over 350 years and only gained independence after World War II.

Indonesian society comprises a wide variety of ethnic and linguistic groups, the largest of which are the Javanese. There are also five main religions. Therefore, national identity is shaped by the motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity).

With an average elevation of 367 meters, Indonesia ranks 103rd. Its lowest point is at 0 meters and its highest at 4,884 meters.

  Personal information:
Of course, I only saw very little of Indonesia and its more than 100 active volcanoes. Hindu-influenced Bali and a few more active volcanoes are still on my wish list.

During my Southeast Asia trip, I only had four days in Jakarta. While the city boasts an impressive skyline of skyscrapers, it lacks a truly must-see building. Initially, I was surprised that there's no hop-on/hop-off bus, but the city doesn't offer much, so there aren't many tourists.

Jakarta Old Town is worth seeing, but for such a large city, it's rather underwhelming as almost the only highlight. Therefore, I'm not drawn back to Jakarta!

We booked a day tour that included volcanoes, rice paddies, tea plantations, coffee roasters, etc., which was very nice.

Off the cuff, the best thing about Jakarta was its large shopping malls with great clothes and fair prices.
