  Official information:
The Republic of Korea, commonly known as South Korea, is a democratic state in East Asia. Since the division of Korea in 1945, South Korea has occupied the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.

The Korean Empire was annexed by Japan in 1910, and after the end of World War II, coinciding with Japan's surrender, Korea was divided into two occupation zones by the Soviet Union and the United States. In 1948, two separate states were established, a consequence of persistent political tensions. The Korean War between North and South Korea (1950-1953) severely strained relations between the two nations, a situation that persists to this day.

With 500,000 active-duty soldiers, South Korea has a larger military than any European NATO member. This is roughly equivalent to the combined personnel strength of the armed forces of Great Britain, France, and Germany.

With an average elevation of 450 meters, South Korea ranks 82nd in the world. The lowest point is at 0 meters and the highest at 2,656 meters.

  Personal information:
In 2009 and 2010, I had two week-long work trips to the Korean Peninsula. The extended weekends before and after my stay allowed me to do some sightseeing. Before heading to Ulsan in 2009, where I visited the surrounding area, museums, and an election museum, I spent a day in Seoul, despite the November frost.

In August 2010, I was greeted by tropical heat and 100% humidity.

I really enjoyed South Korea, its people, its culture, and its food. I would definitely travel to South Korea again!
