  Official information:
The United States of America is, according to its Constitution, a democratic, federal republic in North America with currently 50 states.

The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world by area and the third largest by population.

On July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the United States Declaration of Independence, thus founding the USA.

During the Spanish-American War and later in World War I, the USA rose to become a world power, its military strength securing its global influence.

Measured by total national wealth, the USA is by far the wealthiest country in the world, despite significant wealth inequality.

With an average elevation of 760 meters, the United States ranks 44th in the world. The lowest point is at -86 meters and the highest at 6,190 meters.

  Personal information:
Strictly speaking, my first trip to America was in 1995. Although I only had a regular transit through Dallas from Frankfurt am Main to Mexico City, I still had to deal with all the immigration paperwork and unfriendly border officials.

Then, in 2002, I spent six weeks working in New Jersey, with the opportunity to visit New York on weekends. New York was fantastic, but the Americans seemed very superficial to me at the time.

For another work assignment, I traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the South twice in 2006. The weekend trips through South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee—Charleston, Cypress Garden, Francis Beidler Forest, Myrtle Beach, Great Smoky Mountain State Park, the Cherokee Reservation, Devil's Kitchen, etc.—were impressive. However, the highways were in very poor condition with huge potholes, and while there were many fast-food outlets along the main thoroughfare, there was usually nothing at all for a while inland. Driving home in the dark on back roads is an adventure.

My most recent work assignment took me to Wichita, pretty much in the middle of the USA. Instead of Dodge City, I spent my one free day in Kansas City (Missouri).

The West Coast has always been on my wish list, but these days it seems you're no longer welcome in the USA, and it's more dangerous there than in South America. On top of that, there's the mentally ill President Trump (in my opinion, as of today, January 2026, he probably won't survive another two years with his mental and physical decline) and his spineless Republicans...
